Why new equipment, floor area and operating hours should be reviewed against existing electrical capacity.
1. Expansion changes the electrical picture
New floor area, air-conditioning, production equipment, kitchens, pumps, IT systems or longer operating hours can materially increase demand on an existing installation.
2. List what is changing
Create a schedule of proposed equipment, ratings, operating patterns and which loads may run at the same time.
3. Compare new demand with existing capacity
Review incoming supply, transformers where applicable, main switchgear, distribution boards, feeders and circuits to understand where capacity limits may exist.
4. Look for condition as well as capacity
An old or poorly maintained component may require attention even if its nominal rating appears adequate for the proposed load.
5. Consider power quality and starting characteristics
Some equipment can introduce starting currents, harmonics, power-factor or other operating effects that should be considered in the wider electrical review.
6. Plan the upgrade before installation begins
A capacity review can identify whether the expansion needs redistribution, new feeders, upgraded equipment, a different supply arrangement or further detailed design.
This article is general educational guidance. Electrical design, testing, maintenance or upgrade decisions should be based on the actual installation and agreed professional scope.
