What should an electrical design include before construction?

A practical guide to the design information that helps a project move into procurement and installation with fewer unanswered questions.

A practical guide to the design information that helps a project move into procurement and installation with fewer unanswered questions.

1. Start with the design brief

Before drawing circuits, define how the building will be used, the spaces and equipment involved, expected operating conditions, project interfaces and future expansion assumptions.

2. Build a load picture

Connected loads, demand assumptions and major equipment should be understood so distribution equipment and supply decisions are based on the intended use rather than guesswork.

3. Define the distribution concept

The project team should understand how power is intended to move from the source through main and sub-distribution equipment to final circuits and connected loads.

4. Coordinate layouts

Lighting points, socket outlets, equipment supplies, boards, routes and service zones should be coordinated with architectural, structural and other building-services information.

5. Include protection and earthing considerations

Protective arrangements, earthing and bonding principles, isolation and other safety-related requirements should be addressed at a level appropriate to the project and applicable standards.

6. Issue information that can be built and checked

Drawings, schedules, diagrams, notes and specifications should be clear enough for pricing, installation supervision, testing and handover activities.

Project-specific conditions matter.
